When I came out dressed in my best jeans and tie, Liz was waiting in the front room, wearing a halter dress that showed off her shoulders and legs. “Wow, you look amazing,” I said. “I, um, this is unexpected.”

“Yeah, Wayne warned me he was going to force you out tonight. He said you’ve been working too hard, and I know I’m up for a change of scenery. I’ve eaten so much hotel chicken I’m about to sprout feathers.”

I chuckled. “Name any place you want to go. Tonight is yours.”

“In that case, I wouldn’t mind some Italian.” She looked at me with hopeful eyes and I knew I wouldn’t have refused her anything.

“Yeah, that sounds great.”

I called for the limo and I felt a bit strange going out with her and not holding her hand, so I offered her my arm.

“Thanks,” she said, taking it. I opened the doors for her and treated her like a lady, just how my mama taught me.

We got in the limo and I asked the driver to take us to a nice Italian restaurant. He knew the city better than us, and when we got out at Francesco’s, I knew he had picked a place we’d fit in.

It was a nice little place situated with an exceptional view, and we were seated at a table for two where we could see it. “This is nice,” I said. “I hope the food is good.”

“It smells wonderful,” she said. “I can’t believe Wayne took charge, but I’m glad he did.”

“It was more like a hostile takeover,” I said, realizing she might think I didn’t want to be there with her. “But I have to say, I’d rather be here than anywhere else.” I lifted my glass of wine just as the waiter walked away. “To good company.”

“Thank you,” she said, lifting her glass in kind and taking a sip. “Mmm, that’s good.” She took another big swallow as I chuckled.

“Drink up. We have a whole bottle and a babysitter.”

“That was sweet of him.”

“I think he misses his kids. And he’s always been close to Max. They like monster movies.”

“He told me. I just hope that Max doesn’t get scared. He might want me to sleep in his room again.”

“As long as he doesn’t come sleep in my room. He’s a cover hog.” I wondered if she were a cover hog. Or if maybe her feet would be cold against my legs if we were to sleep beside each other.

Amelia had always had cold feet. She’d tuck them up against my legs, and even though it was freezing, I’d let her. I missed that.

I tried not to get in a funk over my deceased wife. I had a beautiful woman in front of me and there was nothing stopping me from enjoying the evening with her.

“So, tell me about yourself. Last time, you said we were strangers.”

“We’re getting acquainted,” she said, giving her bare shoulder a lift. “I’d hardly call us strangers now. But there is a lot we don’t know.
