When I came out dressed in my best jeans and tie, Liz was waiting in the front room, wearing a halter dress that showed off her shoulders and legs. âWow, you look amazing,â I said. âI, um, this is unexpected.â
âYeah, Wayne warned me he was going to force you out tonight. He said youâve been working too hard, and I know Iâm up for a change of scenery. Iâve eaten so much hotel chicken Iâm about to sprout feathers.â
I chuckled. âName any place you want to go. Tonight is yours.â
âIn that case, I wouldnât mind some Italian.â She looked at me with hopeful eyes and I knew I wouldnât have refused her anything.
âYeah, that sounds great.â
I called for the limo and I felt a bit strange going out with her and not holding her hand, so I offered her my arm.
âThanks,â she said, taking it. I opened the doors for her and treated her like a lady, just how my mama taught me.
We got in the limo and I asked the driver to take us to a nice Italian restaurant. He knew the city better than us, and when we got out at Francescoâs, I knew he had picked a place weâd fit in.
It was a nice little place situated with an exceptional view, and we were seated at a table for two where we could see it. âThis is nice,â I said. âI hope the food is good.â
âIt smells wonderful,â she said. âI canât believe Wayne took charge, but Iâm glad he did.â
âIt was more like a hostile takeover,â I said, realizing she might think I didnât want to be there with her. âBut I have to say, Iâd rather be here than anywhere else.â I lifted my glass of wine just as the waiter walked away. âTo good company.â
âThank you,â she said, lifting her glass in kind and taking a sip. âMmm, thatâs good.â She took another big swallow as I chuckled.
âDrink up. We have a whole bottle and a babysitter.â
âThat was sweet of him.â
âI think he misses his kids. And heâs always been close to Max. They like monster movies.â
âHe told me. I just hope that Max doesnât get scared. He might want me to sleep in his room again.â
âAs long as he doesnât come sleep in my room. Heâs a cover hog.â I wondered if she were a cover hog. Or if maybe her feet would be cold against my legs if we were to sleep beside each other.
Amelia had always had cold feet. Sheâd tuck them up against my legs, and even though it was freezing, Iâd let her. I missed that.
I tried not to get in a funk over my deceased wife. I had a beautiful woman in front of me and there was nothing stopping me from enjoying the evening with her.
âSo, tell me about yourself. Last time, you said we were strangers.â
âWeâre getting acquainted,â she said, giving her bare shoulder a lift. âIâd hardly call us strangers now. But there is a lot we donât know.
